Dereth

Dereth is a tiny speck of an island in the northern oceans.<ref name="GlobeOfAuberan">2001/02 Lonely In The World - Hieromancer's Armor: Globe of Auberean description</ref> It is located to the southwest of the large psuedo-peninsula jutting out from the northern polar cap.<ref>2004/09 Developer Quotes: Dereth's Location on Auberean</ref> Dereth is the Isparian name for the island. The Falatacot (and later the Dericost) called it Killiakta, the Isle of Woe. The Yalaini called it Ireth Lassel.

Dereth is part of an archipelago<ref name="TheIronCoastTeaser">2002/11 The Iron Coast - Teaser</ref> made of many islands, which include:

  • Aerlinthe - a volcanic island to the northeast of Dereth. Formerly a Yalaini colony.
  • Aphus Lassel - a chain of seven tropical islands to the east of Dereth. It is home to a band of free tuskers.
  • Asheron's Island - a small island to the east of Dereth, where Asheron resides in his castle.
  • Dark Isle - a desolate island to the northeast of Dereth. It was once sealed away under the sea.
  • Degar'Alesh - a tropical island located to the southeast of Dereth. It is also known as Freebooter Isle by the Isparians.
  • Halaetan Isles - a chain of five major islands (and eight smaller islands) to the northwest of Dereth. It was once hidden behind the Fiun Barrier.
  • Marae Lassel - an island to the west of Osteth and north of the Direlands. It was once a Yalaini nature preserve, and its name translates to Sheltering Isle.
  • Nyr'leha - a sandy island to the south of the Direlands. It is also known as Moarsman City by the Isparians.
  • Singularity Caul - an artificial island to the southwest of Dereth.
  • Vesayen Isles - a chain of fifteen tropical islands to the southeast of Dereth.
  • Vissidal - a risen island to the northwest of Dereth. Its name means Summer Palace in Falatacot.

Dericost

The continent where the kingdom of Dericost was located is described as being to the southeast of Dereth.<ref name="SQTheHistoricalOverview">2000/05 Stormwaltz Quotes: The Historical Overview</ref> The Dericostian continent is also said to be north of the Yalaini archipelago.<ref name="SQTheHistoricalOverview" />

Locations known to exist on the Dericostian content include:

Falatacot

While the Falatacot are perhaps most known for residing on Dereth, they seem to have first come from another land.

In the text the Decrepit Tome, Geraine describes the continent of the Falatacot to be somewhere beyond the western sea.<ref name="DecrepitTome">2002/09 Verdict - Gaerlan's Citadel: Decrepit Tome</ref>

In another text, the Tome of the Elements, Gaerlan describes the Falatacot as having a home far to the west, beyond Dereth.<ref name="TomeOfTheElements">2002/04 Betrayal - Gelidite Library Quest: Tome of the Elements</ref> It is not clear, however, if this is referring to an origin point for the Falatacot, or a place where some of them went to.

Haebrous

Locations known to exist on the Haebrean content include:

Yalain

The Yalaini archipelago is said to be south of the Dericostian continent.<ref name="SQTheHistoricalOverview" />

Development

The term Auberean is derived from Toby Ragaini's user name of Auberon.<ref name="TobyRagainiQ&AQuestion20">2021/07 Toby Ragaini 2021 Q&A: Question 20</ref>

Auberean seems to first come into use at the end of the first story arc, The Fourth Sending of Darkness.

Auberean first appears in October 2000's Hollow Victory event, as part of the Floating City Quest:

Drunken with new knowledge after the magic of portals were "first" harnessed by Asheron, it seems they explored all of Auberean eagerly, and stumbled upon ruins containing even older and more obscure magic.<ref name="AStainedBookBanderlingArea">2000/10 Hollow Victory - Floating City Quest: A Stained Book (Banderling Area)</ref>

he remains of containers and bottles tell me the food and drink here came from around Auberean; the best of everything came here: fruit, meat, cheese, fine teas, distilled spirits.<ref name="AStainedBookBar">2000/10 Hollow Victory - Floating City Quest: A Stained Book (Bar)</ref>

Auberean comes up again in November 2000, this time on the Turbine Games Q&A, where Stormwaltz explains a bit about magic in the universe where the worlds of Auberean and Ispar exist.<ref name="TurbineGamesQ&ABackstoryQ16">2000/11 Turbine Games Q&A: Backstory Question 16</ref><ref name="TurbineGamesQ&ABackstoryQ25">2000/11 Turbine Games Q&A: Backstory Question 25</ref>

Finally, Auberean appears again in December 2000's The Child of Daralet event, in the text Asheron's Missive:

I have instructed my emissaries to distribute these notes to your people because it is in the power of humans, and no one else in Auberean, to defeat Bael'Zharon.<ref name="AsheronsMissive">2000/12 The Child of Daralet - Asheron's Missive</ref>
